Junior Certificate Art

The Art Department are pleased to announce some fine results from Junior Certificate Art candidates 2009/10. Well done to all pupils involved!

This years Junior Certificate Pupils are now in the process of trying to define the type of theme they wish to research and develop for their Junior Certificate Art Project. Pupils are beginning to make progress with preliminary drawings as can be seen in the pictures below.

Although the Project Themes for 2010/11 have not yet been published, the syllabus remains the same and can be viewed  here.

College Chapel

Form VI Q Set has begun work on a long-term project which uses the College Chapel as a primary research source. Once the pupils entered the Chapel and began to closely observe the structure and the decorative nature of its interior, they soon discovered a cornucopia of riches with which to whet their artistic appetites!

The pupils took photos, made sketches and rubbings in an effort to record as much information as possible in a double lesson. The numerous motifs, stained glass windows, inscriptions on plaques and glass,  the various carvings in wood and marble, and the patterns in the masonary provided a well of inspiration for the pupils. The next step of the project it to create a number of mood boards which are based on their research work.

Colour

Here at Scc Art we love colour; tints, shades, and intensity. Colour is all around us. In our daily lives we encounter the most beautiful arrays of colour in the most ordinary of settings but for one reason or another they often go unnoticed. Observe how beautiful the colours are in the photo below which was taken in a bakery in France (sorry you can't buy these locally!)

The following link will help to improve your knowledge and appreciation of colour and lots more besides; artyfactory

Public Art

A new piece of public art celebrates the tradition of young people riding horses bareback around Dublin.

It is called Misneach, 'courage' in Irish,  and this bronze sculpture by artist John Byrne will be unveiled next week  in Ballymun. A full article on this piece of art from The Irish Times can be read HERE. It also comments on a YouTube video which shows the making of Misneach and includes an explaination by the artist of the thought process behid the piece.

Monotypes

The Form VI Q Set have got off to a great start this year producing a strong collection of monoprints. The prints were created with a limited amount of materials, ink, paper, glass and rollers but still remain very effective.

Form IV Photography Module

Form IV have now begun their photography module with Mr. Watts. They will cover the basics of taking photos with an SLR camera and traditional developing techniques for  black and white prints. In addition to this they will develop skills in digital photography. We are also very excited about using newly acquired software 'Adobe Lightbox 3' for digital photography.   Sccart would like to draw attention to the copies of 'Practical Photography' which reside in the College Library. The June 2010 issue discusses in one article, 'How to use light', in order to improve your photographic skills. It is also worth checking out the photography links on the side-bar of this blog, especially the inspirational 1x.com.

While on the subject of our wonderful library, it is also worth mentioning that The Irish Arts Review is also available for perusing at your leisure. It is a quarterly magazine whose most recent cover story highlights the work of Irish painter Mary Swanzy

Festival of Colour

Posted today is a batik that was completed last term by senior cycle pupil Olivia Plunkett. Her inspiration was drawn from a picture of a boy celebrating 'Lathmar Holi',  (festival of colours).

Senior Cycle Craft-work

Over the next few days SCC Art will publish a number of batiks that were completed by senior cycle pupils during the last term. Posted today is a vibrant image of two birds in flight by Georgina Wilson. This batik includes a broad range of visual texture as well as an excellent use of colour, the clarity of which adds greatly to the overall effect.

Surrealist Tea!

A new term has now begun and while we wait for the artworks of 2010/11 to get underway, SCC Art has delved into its archives and uncovered some gems! This piece of work was completed almost two years ago by the then Form IV pupil James Bowlby. It is rather reminisent of Meret Oppenheim's fur- lined tea cup produced in 1936. Granted James's teapot is a lot less surreal given that he has used good old tea bags to decorate his tea pot; not as 'out there' as drinking from a cup made of fur (yuk!). However it is somewhat surreal to think that one could possibly contain a pot of tea brewed in a pot made of just bags! It is certainly a humorous little sculpture!
