Celebrity Portraits!

Moving on from the monochrome green paintings completed earlier in the term, Form II tried painting their favorite celebrities. Using just black, white and grey, the pupils painted the shadows, contours and planes of the face to bring to life their chosen celebrity. Check out the results!

Green fingers!

Although it has been some time since we posted any pupil work, the art room has been a busy place with pupils  producing all kinds of things! In addition to  portfolio preparation, Form IV Photography and all the usual weekly lessons there have been junior and senior art trips to 'Sculpture in Context' at the Botanic Gardens, as well as the making of  props for the Form I and II plays which will be performed in the coming weeks. Posted today is work by Form II.

 

 After carrying out a colour mixing exercise, Form II used view finders to organise compositions with green fruit and vegetables.  We photographed the compositions and used them to refer to for the paintings. The objective of the lesson was to focus pupils attention on colour, shape, texture and composition.

 As part of  the Hugh Lane Gallery workshop that Form II attended last week, they produced a painting in response to the work that they viewed in the Gallery. Posted today are some of the paintings.

Junior Certificate Art Exhibition

 

 The end of term is fast approaching and this evening will see The College host the Junior Cert Art Exhibition in the BSR. This will take place after the Annual Carol Service in The College Chapel. The work of the Junior Cert Art pupils from the last academic year will be available to view throughout the evening. The standard this year is very high with approximately 50% of the pupils achieving an 'A' grade. It will be well worth a visit. Images in this post offer a glimpse of what will be on show.

Examinations

Examinations have begun for all Forms and posted this week are some examples of observational drawings created by pupils during examinations week. Posted today is work by Form II. 

 

 

 

 

Graphic Design

Today's long overdue post features work from Form II.  The theme 'Me myself and I' was explored through collage. Thumbnail sketches based on the imagey in the collages formed the basis of the design process for creating an album cover. Images below depict some of the album covers as works in progress. More examples will be posted during the week.

Art Prize Winners 2012

Samuel Clarke in Form III who won the Junior Art Prize last term prepares a sample of his work for display on St. Columba's Day. All of the prize winners will have a piece of their work displayed in the Sports Hall on Saturday June 2nd.

Examinations

This week has seen the Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate pupils undergo their Art, Craft and Design Exams. The Junior Certificate Art, Craft and Design Exam took place on Wednesday  morning. The pictures posted today show some of their drawings in progress. The Leaving Certificate Craft Exam took place today and their two drawing exams will be completed tomorrow.

Junior Certificate Art Exhibition

The Annual Art Exhibition of Junior Cert work that was completed during 2010/11 will be on display tomorrow evening in the BSR. It follows the Carol Service in the Chapel and the work can be viewed while sipping on mulled wine and munching mince pies!

Posted below is a small selection of some the work on display tomorrow evening.

BOO!

Form I undertook to complete a brief for their prep which asked them to create a Halloween themed piece of art with nothing more than a piece of orange and black paper , a scissors and a stick of glue. A number of interesting pieces were created ranging from paper sculpture to a torn paper image of a pumpkin! Fireworks and scary faces were also included but we have chosen to publish the work of Art Punch (see below) for the array of images and text that he chose to depict. We especially like the contrast of the torn paper in the pumpkin's face and the clean edges of the remaining images. In addition to this, consideration has been given to the overall balance of the composition. Happy Halloween!

Competitions!

There are two competitions coming up that pupils may find a worthwhile experience to enter. The first is the Doodle for Google Competition which is open to all pupils. The second competition is linked to the charity Sightsavers, but is only available for the pupils in Form Primary. Please ask your art teacher for more information.

Identity

The Form I Identity project has continued to develop over the last week. All pupils are using text to help to portray their identity pictire. Some pupils have also opted to use colour. Posted today are some examples of the work in progress.
